The Washington State PTA is pleased to announce that Governor Jay Inslee will be a guest speaker at the 100th Annual Washington State PTA Convention. He will be speaking about education from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Grand Ballroom of the Bellevue Hyatt Regency Hotel. There will also be a brief period for questions and answers to give PTA delegates a chance to ask questions from their local units regarding education.
Washington State PTA’s top priority is to improve the basic education of every child and ensure all children are given a rigorous and enriching K-12 experience that prepares them for career and college.
In Olympia this spring, the governor proposed targeted investments in STEM education, early learning, drop-out prevention, and reading support. He proposed funding for middle and high school that would support a basic six-period day and 24-credit diploma, and he worked to secure money to help turn around struggling schools and invest in the training and development of our educators.
“Governor Inslee’s efforts directly support our association’s top legislative priorities, developed and voted on by members last fall, and we look forward to hearing his plans for education and our children’s future,” said Novella Fraser, Washington State PTA President.
“Education is the paramount duty of the state and we need to embrace an innovative public education system for every child,” commented Governor Inslee. “My vision for education is that all students graduate from high school with 21st century skills, that we eliminate the achievement and opportunity gaps that exist today and that all Washington students have access to post secondary education or training of their choice,” he said.
PTA delegates representing more than 900 local PTAs and 33 councils from around the state will be attending the historic 100th Annual Convention on May 3-5. In addition to hearing the governor speak, delegates will attend selected classes, vote on statewide PTA candidates and the business of the association, and share ideas with other PTA leaders.
